孤星序曲 - 道斯

Lone Star Overture  - Thomas Doss 



The title of this overture refers to the Lone Star Ranch in Weilbach, Austria, where Missouri Foxtrotters and Quarter Horses are bred. The Missouri Foxtrotter, also known by the name “Cowboy's Cadillac”, is a calm and good-natured family horse, suitable for long rides. These horses originally came from Texas, which is nicknamed The Lone Star State. In addition to a romantic Wild West flair, which this ranch has brought to this region of Austria, this overture is influenced by folk music of different European nations, completing the picture of the Lone Star Ranch and its surroundings to create a charming musical picture.

English Folk Song Suite - Ralph Vaughan Williams 


《英國民謠組曲》是作曲家最著名的作品之一,原本是由軍樂團演奏,後再改編給管弦樂團及管樂團。第一樂章由木管奏出的《Seventeen Comes Sunday》開始,後加入銅管,再由平靜的《Pretty Caroline》接上。樂章最後在《Dives and Lazarus》高音木管和低音銅管互相拮抗的節奏中完結。第二樂章《My Bonny Boy》由雙簧管獨奏引起,慢慢發展成輕快的英格蘭華爾茲《Green Bushes》,然後在重覆前段後完結。第三樂章《Folk Songs from Somerset》以單簧管獨奏起始,漸漸演變為強大的合奏,然後由低音樂器奏出的《High Germany》取代,再轉成木管輕柔的《Whistle, Daughter, Whistle》。低音樂器厚重的旋律《John Barleycorn》之後出現,伴着短號高吭的樂聲,帶領樂曲重新回到前兩段旋律作結。


English Folk Song Suite is one of the composer’s most well-known works. It was first published for military band, and later arranged for orchestra and brass band. The first movement opens with Seventeen Come Sunday played by the woodwinds, later joined by the brass. It is followed by the quiet Pretty Caroline, and ends with Dives and Lazarus, with countering rhythms between the upper woodwinds, and the saxophone and lower brass. The second movement, My Bonny Boy, opens with an oboe solo and develops into the faster English waltz Green Bushes, finally closing with a repeat of the first melody. The third movement, Folk Songs from Somerset, opens with Blow Away the Morning Dew by the solo clarinet, gradually building into a strong tutti. The second melody, High Germany, played by the lower instruments, then takes over and transforms into the delicate Whistle, Daughter, Whistle played by the woodwinds. Eventually the lower instruments enter with a heavy melody, John Barleycorn, along with the decorative sounds of the cornet on top, leading to a repeat of the first and second melodies.

《陽光小島》進行曲 - 黃佳俊

Sunny Island March - Wong Kah Chun 

《陽光小島》進行曲是作曲家受新加坡教育部委託,為2017年新加坡青年節所作。樂曲共分為四個部份。第一部份《無限的夢》是一段緩慢前序,帶出青年對前路不安但樂觀的態度。第二部份《熱帶的微風》 是一首輕快的進行曲。第三部份《劃舢舨》勾劃閑適的海灘情景。最後的高潮《伸手摘星》融合了所有的主題和熟悉的民謠,將樂曲推向一個振奮的完結。


Sunny Island March is a composition commissioned by the Ministry of Education for the Singapore Youth Festival 2017. It comprises four sections: a slow introduction entitled Infinite Dreams, which contains the feelings of uncertainty but also positive energy in our youths, Tropical Breeze, which is a light-hearted and cheery quick march, Dayung Sampan that evokes images of an idyllic beach scene, and lastly the climax Reach for the Stars, which combines the original themes together with a highly recognizable folk song for a rousing finale.

美麗的梭羅河 - 葛桑(K.O.編)

Bengawan Solo - Gesang Martohartono (arr. by K.O) 


Written in 1940 by Gesang Martohartono in the local kroncong (an ukulele-like instrument) style that is influenced by Portuguese music, Bengawan Solo is a famous Indonesian song about the eponymous river that flows through central Java and is the longest river in Indonesia. The song describes the river in a poetic and nostalgic way, that it is surrounded by mountains, its sources near the city of Surakarta, that it ends in the sea and is used by merchants, yet also strongly associated with the Japanese occupation and Indonesian society at the time, being written at the time of World War II.

俄羅斯節慶  - 多臣

A Russian Festival - Jay Dawson 


Situated in the far North and spanning from the Pacifc Ocean on the East to the Baltic Sea on the West, Russia is home to many peoples, each with their distinct cultures and traditions. A Russian Festival celebrates the diversity in Russian culture with traditional Russian folk music, including Korobeiniki (Tetris’s theme), Polyushka Polye and Song of the Volga Boatmen, handed down orally through generations, giving us a glimpse into the mysterious cultures of this distant land.

英國航海之歌組曲 - 史柏克

An English Sea Song Suite - Philip Sparke 



《冶艷的阿瑞圖莎》來自契爾德1976年的劇作《Lock and Key》,劇中主角海軍軍官在窗下唱出這首歌曲來取悅他的情人,歌曲從此大受歡迎。阿瑞圖莎亦是一艘英國軍艦的名稱,曾與法國軍艦艷女號在1778年美國獨立戰爭中交戰。








The four tunes used in this suite have been made universally popular in Sir Henry Wood's Fantasia on British Sea Songs, which is an ever-present ingredient in The Last Night of the Proms. He introduced this colourful suite to the Proms in 1905, to celebrate the centenary of Nelson's brilliant victory at Trafalgar, when “Britannia really did rule the waves”. This arrangement of the original tunes has been made in the year of that famous sea battle's bicentenary. The tunes, however, all have very different pedigrees: 


The Saucy Arethusa first appeared in William Shield's 1796 play Lock and Key where the hero, a naval officer, sang it as a serenade under the window of his lady-love. The song achieved immediate and lasting popularity. HMS Arethusa was a British naval vessel which had given chase to and engaged the French ship La Belle Poule in June 1778. 


Farewell and Adieu was a capstan shanty, which would have been sung on board ship as the capstan was turned to raise the anchor for its homeward journey. The earliest known reference to the tune is in the 1796 logbook of a naval ship called The Nellie, but it is certainly much older than that. Its words describe sailors returning to England from Spain.


Tom Bowling was written by Charles Dibdin on the death of his eldest brother, Thomas Dibdin, captain of a ship in the East India trade who died at sea. It first appeared in the ballad opera The Oddities which was performed at London's Lyceum Theatre in 1789. The song is also known as the Sailor's Epitaph and describes the heroic adventures of its eponymous hero. 

Such is the widespread popularity of Jack's the Lad or The Sailor's Hornpipe that it is claimed as a national tune by Ireland and Scotland as well as England. The dance gets its name because it was accompanied by a hornpipe, a wooden pipe with spaced holes and a mouthpiece made of horn. As a dance, the hornpipe dates back to the 15th century and was soon associated with sailors and the sea, with steps that relate to naval activities. One of the earliest printings of this particular tune appears in a volume entitled Compleat Tutor for the German Flute, published in 1766.

West Side Story is probably the best-known musical of the great American composer Leonard Bernstein, based in the Manhattan slums and on Shakespeare’s classic tragedy Romeo and Juliet. The story ultimately advocates the unchanged, ever-sought-after virtue of love.

West Side Story displays grandiose and magnificent scenes of dancing and singing, with a full Broadway crew and cast. With its unique and bright music, meaningful lyrics, and vigour and passion, it is not only seen by the popular music industry as the classic of Broadway productions, but also the model of modern opera in the classical music circle.

《美女與野獸》是華特迪士尼動畫工作室於1991年製作的浪漫音樂動畫。 故事藍本是於1756年面世的同名法國童話,以及1946年由Jean Cocteau執導的同名法國電影。 電影的配樂獲得了影評人和樂評人的一致好評,獲得了多個獎項,包括金球獎最佳原創樂曲獎,奧斯卡最佳原創樂曲獎和格萊美獎為電影或電視劇創作的最佳器樂作品。

In 1991, Walt Disney Feature Animation produced an animated musical romantic fantasy film Beauty and the Beast. It is based on the 1756 French fairytale of the same name by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont, and ideas from the 1946 French film of the same name directed by Jean Cocteau. The soundtrack in the movie was a massive success, receiving universal praise and recognition from both film and music critics. The music featured on the album won several awards, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score, the Academy Award for Best Original Score and the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition Written for a Motion Picture or for Television.

《歌聲魅影》是一部知名的音樂劇,由韋伯作曲,劇情根據法國偵探小說家勒胡所著的愛情驚慄小說《歌劇魅影》改編。 故事圍繞著一位美麗的女高音克里斯汀,以及迷戀着她,住在巴黎歌劇院地下迷宮中神秘、醜陋的音樂天才。




The Phantom of the Opera is a musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Based on the 1910 French novel of the same name by Gaston Leroux, its central plot revolves around a beautiful soprano, Christine Daaé, who becomes the obsession of a mysterious, disfigured musical genius living in the subterranean labyrinth beneath the Paris Opera building.


The musical opened in London’s West End in 1986, and on Broadway in 1988. It won the 1986 Olivier Award and the 1988 Tony Award for Best Musical, and Michael Crawford (in the title role) won the Olivier and Tony Awards for Best Actor in a Musical. It is the longest running show in Broadway history by a wide margin, and celebrated its 10 000th Broadway performance on 11 February 2012, the first production to ever do so.

歌舒詠交響曲 - 歌舒詠(栢加編)

The Symphonic Gershwin - George Gershwin (arr. Warren Barker) 



《歌舒詠交響曲》是美國作曲家栢加將 《一個美國人在巴黎》、《藍色狂想曲》及《古巴》序曲改編,完美地連貫了三首樂曲,帶領大家走訪法國、美國與古巴三地。樂曲由管樂團齊奏《藍色狂想曲》熟悉的旋律,引領大家進入 《一個美國人在巴黎》,描繪了歌舒詠在法國大街小巷的興奮心情。木管與銅管活潑生動的旋律互相和應之餘,更以富有特色的的士響號作為陪襯。下一段懶洋洋的藍調由長號奏起,並由小號獨奏出經典旋律,代表着歌舒詠的思鄉之情。






Gershwin is one of the most significant composers of the United States. Not only renowned for the Broadway musicals that he wrote with his brother, but also created the fusion between Jazz, Pop and classical music, establishing the music styles of the U.S.


Symphonic Gershwin is a medley with selections from Gershwin’s An American in Paris, Rhapsody In Blue and Cuban Overture, arranged by American composer Warren Barker. It begins with the famous melody from Rhapsody In Blue as the short introduction, followed by a lively melody from An American in Paris, describing the excitement when Gershwin was in the streets of France. Apart from the conversation between woodwind and brass sections, you may hear the imitation of the taxi horn. The next section starts with lazy sounding blues, with the main melody by trombone and trumpet solo, suggesting his homesickness.


The next piece, Rhapsody In Blue, Gershwin’s most well-known composition, is an experimental music that attempts to break the boundaries of Jazz and classical music. The lively and rhythmic melodies correspond with rich harmonies, giving us an impression of the bustling streets among high-rises in great American cities. 

At last, Cuban Overture was inspired by the Rumba dance Gershwin met in Cuban. He infused the western classical orchestra settings with the Cuban style of percussion instruments, bringing us an exotic flavour of Cuban rhythms.

《Sing, Sing, Sing》 - 派瑪(岩井直溥編)

Sing, Sing, Sing - Louis Prima (arr. Iwai Naohiro) 


《Sing Sing Sing》原曲由小號家Louis Prima於1936所作,是搖擺爵士樂曲中的經典。當中又以單簧管演奏家古德曼及其樂團在1937年,為電影《荷里活大酒店》錄制的版本最為人熟悉。爵士鼓是此樂曲的靈魂,除了有大量獨奏外,更維持整首樂曲的動感。時至今日,樂曲已成為音樂文化中不可或缺的一部分。




Sing, Sing, Sing is a classic repertoire in Big Band Jazz, it was written by Trumpet player Louis Prima in 1936. The most popular version was recorded by famous clarinet player, Benny Goodman, and his big band in 1937 for the film Hollywood Hotel. Since then, many different versions and arrangements have appeared. The drumset is significant in this song, which needs to play extensive solos and remain in the groove of the song. The song is already an indispensable part of music culture.


Naohiro Iwai arranged the song for the concert band in 2003, adding new elements without losing the original features. The ensembleship and improvisation of wind instruments lead the audience back to the United States in the 1930s to the era of swing music.
