October - Eric Whitacre

October premiered in 2000, and is named after the composer’s favourite month, which, through its crisp air and subtle change in light, instills a sentiment in the composer. This lush, beautiful piece is specifically written for winds. The simple, pastoral melodies and subsequent harmonies, inspired by the great British composers, are perfect for capturing the natural, quiet beauty of the season.

SOUSA! - John Philip Sousa (arr. Warren Barker)

The great American composer John Philip Sousa is hailed as “The March King” and is best-known for his many military marches. This pompous, gallant, brilliant medley gives us a glimpse into Sousa’s musical legacy by bringing together High School Cadets, The Thunderer, El Capitan, Stars and Stripes Forever, and brings us back to the heyday of Romantic military marches.

Foster Songs Fantasy - Stephen Foster (arr. Goto Yo)

這首樂曲包含了六首他的名曲:《Camptown Races》、《Old Folks at Home》、《Beautiful Dreamer》、《Oh! Susanna》、《Better Times are Coming》及《Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair》,讓大家重温他短暫豐富的人生對音樂的貢獻。

Stephen Foster, known as “the father of American music”, is probably the first composer that is recognizably “American”, though primarily known as a writer of parlour and minstrel music. This delightful piece for bands combines six of his favorites: Camptown Races, Old Folks at Home, Beautiful Dreamer, Oh! Susanna, Better Times are Coming, and Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair, as a celebration of his short, productive life.

Pirates of the Caribbean - Klaus Badelt (arr. Michael Sweenty)

Pirates of the Caribbean is one of the most successful film franchises in the last 20 years. It follows the bizarre adventures (and mishaps) of Captain Jack Sparrow across the seas. The iconic music of the soundtrack brings to mind immediately his heroic, sentimental, if sometimes comic, voyages to the end of the world (and back again) with his friends and crew, and sails us to the fascinating age of piracy.

An American Tail is a 1986 animated film released by Universal Pictures. It tells the perilous emigration of a mouse family from Ukraine (the part of the Russian Empire) to the United States, a country said to have no cats. The song Somewhere Out There aptly symbolizes the power of hope and perseverance amidst adversity. It was nominated for Best Original Song at the 44th Golden Globe Awards and 59th Academy Awards, and won Song of the Year and Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or Television at the 30th Grammy Awards.

Selections from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - Patrick Doyle & John Williams (arr. Michael Story)

這首串燒樂曲選自《哈利波特》電影系列第四部《火盃的考驗》,不但有多度在系列中出現的《Hedwig’s Theme》,還有為本作而寫的《Potter Waltz》、《Foxtrot Fleur》、《The Quidditch World Cup (The Irish)》及《Hogwarts Hymn》,務求重現三巫鬥法大賽的排場、刺激、陰謀與悲劇。

This medley from the soundtrack to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the fourth installment of the Harry Potter film series, not only includes the familiar Hedwig’s Theme from the first three films, but also Potter Waltz, Foxtrot Fleur, The Quidditch World Cup (The Irish) and Hogwarts Hymn from this film, to capture the extravaganza, excitement, intrigue and tragedy around the Triwizard Tournament.

Gurenge - Theme from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - Kayoko Kusano (arr. Miyagawa Seiji)

Gurenge is a song by Japanese pop singer LiSA, and the opening theme song for the anime series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotouge. The series follows Tanjiro Kamado, a young boy who wants to become a demon slayer after his family is slaughtered and his younger sister Nezuko is turned into a demon.

Second Suite for Military Band in F major - Gustav Holst

Holst composed the Second Suite in 1911, but the piece did not receive its first public performance until 1922, at the Royal Albert Hall, London. It is speculated that it was written for an occasion like the Festival of Empire in 1911 at the Crystal Palace. Unlike Holst’s First Suite, the Second Suite is based fully on materials from folk songs and morris dances, as was the fashion of that time. The edition played in today’s concert is a revised edition that has added the parts for some lower woodwinds, but in essence true to the glorious spirit of this classic composition of band music.
