Hong Kong Performers Winds

Hong Kong Performers Winds (HKPW) is a non-profit organisation established in September 2005. The aim of the wind orchestra is to promote wind band music, at the same time providing opportunities for our musicians to widen their interests and knowledge in music.

There are now about 60 members in the band, most of whom are the alumni of TWGHs Wong Fut Nam College Symphonic Band. Other professional musicians are also participating actively in HKPW. Mr. Pak Wing-heng are now serving as consultants of the band, while Mr. Kwan Tsz-lai Steve is the music director and conductor.

In 2006, HKPW was invited as the guest performer in the International Conference in Logistics and Supply Chain Management 2006 and the TWGHs Wong Fut Nam College 45th Anniversary Concert,which organised by the University of Hong Kong and TWGHs Wong Fut Nam College respectively. HKPW also participated in the 14th Asian Pacific Band Directors Association Biennial Convention in Macau in August 2006. HKPW cooperated with the well-known clarinet soloist Mr. Wong Chi-fai Anthony to make its highly successful Premiere Concert in November 2006.

In May 2007, HKPW organised the Childhood Concert, featuring distinguished guest conductors Mr. Pak Wing-heng and Mr. Choy Kwok-tin Martin with a selection of cartoon music. In December 2007, HKPW invited the celebrated flutist Ms. Carmen Ma and oboist Mr. Danny Yau Ka-kei to perform the much praised flute-oboe duet in Annual Concert 2007.

In April 2008, HKPW held the PIT on Stage! Concert, which featured musical and operatic music. In September 2008, HKPW invited Mr. Wong Wai-on Wryane, our Principal Euphonium, to be the soloist in Annual Concert 2008, celebrating the 3rd Anniversary of the Band.

In April 2009, with the compliment of Childhood Concert, HKPW organised the concert Childhood 2 - Adventure of Isla de Pascua's Prince. Beside cooperating with prominent percussionist Mr. Choy Lap-tak, we have brought the audience into the exciting adventure story of the price from Isla de Pascua. In November 2009, HKPW invited Mr. Scott Liu, tuba soloist, to present an inspiring music story in the Annual Concert 2009.

In April 2010, HKPW organized the concert Music Travellers¡¦ Night, which aimed at introducing the hundred years of history of wind band. Various standard band repertoires written by great maestros in the band history were performed and insights on the influences of these works were given by Mr. Kwan Tsz-lai Steve, our Music Director, conductor as well as presenter of this concert.

On 13 November 2010, HKPW is going to present its Annual Concert 2010 to celebrate its 5th Anniverary at Tsuen Wan Town Hall Auditorium.

Apart from the regular band concerts, HKPW is also dedicated to promoting symphonic band music in various ways. In 2006 and 2007, it was invited by Discovery Park to give Christmas and Chinese New Year shows respectively in the shopping mall. In May 2008, HKPW was invited to perform at the HKQAA 1st Writing and Drawing Contest Award Ceremony. In August 2009, HKPW was invited to play in the Home Coming Concert of TWGHs Wong Fut Nam College.

In January 2010, HKPW brass ensemble was invited by Lok Sin Tong, which is a local charity, to play in its volunteers¡¦ oath-taking ceremony. In May 2010, HKPW¡¦s brass players were invited by Hong Kong Institute of Christian Counselors to perform with the choir and brass players from Oilvet Nazarene University, U.S at school visits to Carmel Secondary School and International Christian Quality Music Secondary and Primary School. In July 2010, HKPW was invited to perform at the opening ceremony of the 4th China (Shenzhen) International Youth & Children Arts Exchange Festival and the 16th Asia Pacific Band Fair (Hong Kong 2010). In July and August 2010, HKPW was invited to play in four community concerts organized by the Asian Youth Orchestra for its 20th Anniversary Celebration, at Cathay City in Tung Chung, Olympian City Phase II in Mongkok and Discovery Park in Tsuen Wan.

To support art development and independent artists, HKPW dedicates our expertise in art administration and what we gained from concerts to help organise recitals for independent artists since 2010. This new move of HKPW aims to help artists to gain performing experience and to introduce solo and ensemble music of wind instruments to the public via recitals. We also hope to gather wind instruments players and provide opportunities for them to exchange and share their experience and expertise.In February 2010, HKPW invites Ms. Ng Bo-yee, a young and talented local trombonist to give a recital at Cultural Activities Hall of Tsuen Wan Town Hall. There was performance by a brass ensemble formed by local active players as well.

The second recital ¡V Bass Tuba ¡V will be held on 15 August 2010 (Sunday) at Cultural Activities Hall of Tsuen Wan Town Hall. Our Principal Tuba, Mr. Chan Kin-pang will be the solo tuba and play in a brass quintet formed by HKPW brass players as well.
